Farming and Agriculture Cybersecurity and Data Protection Think Tank

Canadians are more connected now than ever. Our reliance on technology and systems for essential services, including the agriculture sector, require the constant need for innovation and vigilance in cyber security.

The CSGA Farming and Agriculture think tank will contribute to enhancing agricultural critical infrastructure protection globally. This think tank will achieve this by assessing the cyber security capacity of the global agricultural sector and engaging with global farm operators and other stakeholders to promote awareness and develop resources related to cyber security of farming operations.

Terranova Global, operating as the "Cyber Security Global Alliance" is a non-profit corporation mandated in working with our members and partners to create a global Cyber Security network and hub that will educate, certify, accredit, develop programs, offer cyber consultations, and solve the pain points for governments, military, and corporations to protect themselves from malicious threat actors and cyber-attacks no matter where they are or come from in the world today.

Cyber Security Global Alliance welcomes our ag and farming industry leaders to come together to create solutions for the many problems that currently exist in the world today that threaten the day-to-day existence of the human race and our technologies.

Quotes

“Canadian agriculture is a critical and increasingly interconnected service, and it is a key part of our economy, trade, and food supply. This funding to the Community Safety Knowledge Alliance for their Cyber Security Capacity in Canadian Agriculture project will help foster collaboration and protect cyber systems from compromise.”

~ The Honorable Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

“The rapidly evolving cyber threat environment within which Canada’s agricultural sector operates is outpacing the abilities of many farm and other agricultural operations to adapt and respond. This initiative will help better understand and support the sector in closing critical gaps. This will go a long way in protecting this vital segment of our economy – and the livelihoods and well-being of so many families.”

~ Cal Corley, Chief Executive Officer, Community Safety Knowledge Alliance

Cyber threats pose challenges to critical infrastructure every day and can have profound impacts on corporations and the agricultural manufacturing industry. This presentation explained clearly what digital protection is and why it is essential in today's world, demonstrating the importance of cyber awareness, and identify a "must do list" of training and certification processes and opportunities.

Examples:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that in the fall 2021, six grain cooperatives fell victim during harvest to cyber-attacks. In addition, two attacks were levied in early 2022 that could have disrupted seed and fertilizer supplies.

~ “Although ransomware attacks against the entire farm-to-table spectrum of the FA [food and agriculture] sector occur regularly, the number of cyber-attacks against agricultural cooperatives during key seasons is notable.”

~ The FBI, along with cyber security agencies in Australia and the United Kingdom, issued a joint cyber security advisory in February that warns of an evolution in ransomware tactics. High-impact and sophisticated attacks involving critical infrastructure organizations, including agriculture, are becoming more common globally, which could significantly impact the food chain and food security for humans and livestock.

  • A significant disruption of grain and corn production could impact commodities trading and stocks.

  • An attack that disrupts processing at a protein or dairy facility can quickly result in spoiled products and have cascading effects down to the farm level as animals cannot be processed.”

  • At the farm business level, it’s vital to assess risk and develop protocols for critical information back-up, prevention and recovery policies to safeguard against ransomware attempts.

  • Ag businesses should approach cyber security as they do fire safety, he said, with cyber-drills to ensure those involved in the day-to-day running of the farm understand how to quickly implement back-ups in the case of a digital shutdown.

Cyber Security Global Alliance offers all the global elements to educate, train, certify, build awareness, present, drill, and to help our ag industries to advance their knowledge in protecting their critical infrastructure. Vendors should be asked about their privacy policies, whether they share consumer data, and whether their support team is in-house or outsourced. Then clients can assess cyber risk. All this can be done through certified cyber certification which is being run by organizations already estlished with the Cyber Security Global Alliance.
